Reading: "Basics" from A Practical Guide to Musical Composition by Alan Belkin. Also, take the time to listen here to the audio of the repertoire examples he mentions. E-mail me a paragraph about 100-150 words in length describing your experience with the reading, along with any questions you have or concepts you did not understand by Sunday at 5PM.
Bring in a piece you love: Send me a link to a piece / song / music that you love, and be prepared to talk to the class next week about:
- Which parameters of the music are most important to its meaning/expression? How do those parameters interact?
- What aspects of the Belkin reading can you see functioning in your chosen piece? Foreground / background? Continuity / surprise? Punctuation? Stability / instability? Progression?
